“Recycling is not the total answer to the problem of trash but it certainly can be an important part of the answer,” says Nina Stainer, Rappahannock County’s litter coordinator.
Pratically every county in Virginia now has such a post, funded through grants from the state’s Division of Litter Control. “It’s a big network, and we pass information to each other,” Mrs. Stamer noted. In fact, it was from Culpeper’s litter coordinator that she learned of a new salvage company based in Rixeyville that will take not only newspaper, aluminum, and ., glass, but also plastics, magazines, and tin cans.
And now Mrs. Stamer and county administrator John McCarthy are exploring options with Chuck Stennet, the president of Piedmont Recycling, for establishment of a recycling center at the county landfill set to open next week on the Stover tract near Amissville. Still to be settled are the terms for construction of a shed to hold the recycled materials, Mrs. Stamer reported, noting that once an agreement is worked out, it must be accepted by the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors.
None-the-less, she’s hopeful that a center can be ready by Nov. 1, even if it means an up-front expenditure of county funds or forgoing the revenue from sale of salvaged material until the contractor’s capital outlay is recovered.
