The Rappahannock County High School has three fall sports in full swing, and the Panthers are hot on the cross-country trails and the soccer field. The girls basketball team has had less success, but Coach Renee Dingus still expressed satisfaction with the team’s efforts.
In a tri-meet against Brentsville and George Mason on Monday, Coach Scott Mellott said that the Panther harriers nearly ran the other two teams off the course at Brentsville. The team “took a big win,” Coach Mellott said, placing six runners in the top ten. The final total put Rappahannock over the Brentsville Tigers by 28 points, and over George Mason by 47 points.
Placing first overall in the meet was Panther Matt Eidson, followed by teammate Steve Lillard in second place and Jesse Reynolds in fourth. The Panthers top finish was rounded out with senior Harvey Fox in fifth place, Vincent Grigsby in eighth, and Dan Hermann in tenth place.
“I was just as happy as I could be,” Coach Mellott said of the team’s performance Monday. “We were all way up.” He lauded the performance of his young runners over what he called a difficult course, longer than the regulation length for a high school cross-country course.
Coach Mellott called his team “very strong - for everyone being so young . . . The team is just starting to get into form. The next four weeks should be a good four weeks,” the coach predicted.
On Saturday, the Rappahannock harriers travel to Charlottesville for the University of Virginia Invitational meet, which will be held at Piedmont Community College, on Rt. 20 just south of Charlottesville. The Panthers’ heat begins at 4:30 p.m., and Coach Mellott said he is hoping for a good performance from his squad.
Soccer team
The Panthers soccer team is off to a hot start as well, according to Coach Richard Dietz. After four games, Mr. Dietz said Tuesday that the team’s record of 3-1 already surpasses past performances.
“The team is playing very well together,” Coach Dietz said. “Our exchange students are fitting in well,” and he credited their expertise for spurring the team’s success.
“I’m very pleased with the way that the team is playing.” So far, the Panthers have defeated St. Anne’s 4-2, Madison County High School 41, Eastern Mennonite b-3, but was shut out by George Mason, 4-0. The
