Though he sounded much like a candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination next >ear, Mr. Coleman demurred on that question. “It’s not appropriate to talk about the ’89 campaign,” he said. “I am spending my time on the '88 campaign. But,” he added, “the principles which are at stake in 1988 will also be at stake in Virginia in 1989.”
Refocusing on Mr. Bush he said simply, “Look at his record. There has never been a person better qualified for the Presidency.”
And of Mr. Dukakis, Mr. Coleman added, “I’ve lived in Virginia all my life. I am convinced that if people knew his record they would never support him.”
