Fishing season opens Saturday
The 1989 fishing season opens at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 18, and Game Warden Jim Bankston reminds residents that state licenses are necessary to fish anywhere other than on private ponds. Fishing licenses are available at many of the county's general stores. The Rapidan Chapter of Trout Unlimited will once again sponsor its "Kids Only Fishing" on the Rose River in Madison County, along Route 670 between Criglersville and Syria. Members of the club will be there to assist young anglers, who should bring their own tackle and bait (worms, cheeseballs and salmon eggs are suggested). Adults are invited to accompany their children, but they may not fish. Box lunches will be available from the church in Syria, just up the road.
4 Schools schedule makeup day The county's schoolchildren will be short one day of their spring break this year because of last month's snow day. Superintendent David Gangel announced that next Wednesday, March 22 will be a regular school day rather than part of the scheduled spring vacation.
