Book rental subsidy asked
In addition, Dr. Gangel is asking for $11,138 to supplement the county’s book rental system. Current charges to parents of $4 per book for high school students and rates of $27 for elementary students from kindergarten through grade three and $37 for students in grades four through seven have not been paying the full cost of books purchased each year.
Next year many new books, including a whole new series of books for teaching reading, are due to be adopted. Without a supplement from the county, the rental rates will have to be raised drastically. Dr. Gangel explained.
Cost of fringe benefits increases
The category of fixed charges, which includes fringe benefits for all employees except cafeteria workers is up 13 percent.
Most of this category is related directly to salaries, but instead of the current system of offering employees an amount equal to three percent of their salaries to be applied to health insurance, next year Dr. Gangel proposes to offer an amount equal to 70 percent for the single subscriber rate for Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
Some employees who have health insurance elsewhere have chosen to have their three percent applied to special cancer and disability policies offered by American Family Life
