successful. Joe came back to the house to borrow a flashlight, and began the search again. Julia and I could hear more crashings and shouts in the darkness. Occasionally there was the glint of our flashlight through the wet cedars. To me it seemed like a case of “looking for a black bull on a black night.” Julia thought it was more like a “wild bull chase.”
An hour passed, and Joe and Harry came back to the house minus their bull. By now a cold drizzle was falling, and the flashlight battery was weak. I told them to leave the bull where it was. We had good fences, except for the rogue’s gap, and so far as I was concerned, the bull could safely stay overnight.
