For most of the race, traffic will be controlled by a “rolling road block,” Sheriff Woodward told the supervisors, but for the portion of the race through the park, Route 211 will be closed to traffic.
That stretch, down Route 211 from Thornton’s Gap to Sperryville through the switchbacks and horseshoe curves which dot the steep descent, should be one of the “most exciting” parts of the race, Sheriff Woodward said. With no traffic on the road, the bicyclists are expected to reach speeds of 65 to 75 miles per hour.
Sheriff Woodward said that his department will be cooperating with the Virginia State Police to make sure no cars pull out into the middle of the race. NBC will be providing television coverage of the event.
