for kids
Virginia’s trout fishing season opens at 9 a.m. this Saturday, March 18, and children who otherwise might have difficulty finding a place to fish along crowded streams will have a well-stocked stretch of the Rose River in Madison County set aside for them this one day only.
This is the ninth year for this opening-day special, sponsored by the Rapidan Chapter of Trout Unlimited, which usually attracts several hundred young anglers. Only boys and girls 12 and under may fish there; there is no charge and no license is needed. Adults, on the other hand, need a $12 state fishing license plus a $6.50 trout license to fish in stocked streams.
After Saturday’s 9 a.m. start, fishing is permitted from 5 a.m. until one hour after sunset. The minimum legal size is seven inches, and anglers are allowed to catch only six fish per day.
The childrens’ stretch of the Rose is along Route 670 between Criglersville and Syria, where plenty of parking is available. Members of Trout Unlimited will be on hand to assit novice anglers, and the Department of Game and Fisheries stocks this water with plenty of trout to tempt the youngsters and even puts in occasional oversize fish as special trophies.
Children should bring their own tackle and bait, plus a stringer or plastic bag to carry home their fish.
Adults may accompany their children but cannot fish.
