RICHMOND — Who said Virginians wouldn’t like the lottery? Five months after the games’ kickoff, the Virginia Lottery still averages $1 million in daily ticket sales, reaching its $250 million mark on Feb. 14.
Northern Virginians have played their share of the games, according to a recent report issued by the State Lottery' Department. Fairfax County ranks second only to Virginia Beach in total ticket sales, boasting over $14.5 million in sales for the first five months of the games.
Loudoun County’s sales reached over $2.3 million. Fauquier County, with over $1.8 million in total sales, placed 37th among counties and cities in the Commonwealth.
Clarke and Rappahannock County sold more than $290,000 worth of tickets.
The jingle of change can be heard as people continue to delve into their pockets and gather up the scattered coins on the dresser to play the lottery’s fourth game, Loose Change.
To play, one scratches off five coins. If the coins add up to over one dollar, the player can win prizes ranging from a free ticket to $20,000.
Less than one month into the sales, more than 26 million of the 55 million tickets have been sold, according to Paula Otto, public information director.
