and Mutual of Omaha. Others have had the school’s contribution applied to tax-deferred annuities (TDAs). TDAs will not be allowed as fringe benefits under new1 tax laws, so those people will be allowed to choose policies offered by American Family Life or Mutual of Omaha. Those currently in those programs will be allowed to stay in them, but new employees will be offered only the Blue Cross/Blue Shield option.
Another reason for this year’s budget crunch is the state’s lower funding for fixed charges. Last year the county received $300,166 from the state specifically for fixed charges. Next year we will receive $290,214. A new funding system came into effect last year produced by JLARC (Joint Legislative and Review Commission). “Fixed charges are one of the things the state is trying to back away from by the new JLARC method of funding — each year less money,” Dr. Gangel said.
Equipment requested for the elementary school indudes $1,000 for a trophy case, $1,500 for lights for the parking lot and $1,300 for a set of lockers for another classroom.
At the high school $650 is being requested for additional shelving for the library, $4,700 for software and tools for the technology department and $5,000 to install a computer network.
