Administrative costs rise 13%
A breakdown of the budget by categories shows that administration is up 13 percent, or $18,438. A state-mandated school census scheduled for this summer accounts for $3,000 of the increase. It is important that this census be done accurately, Dr. Gangel said, “For every child we miss we stand to lose $1,000.”
Electronic mail from the Department of Education in Richmond, another state mandate, has led to increased telephone usage and an increase in that budget category of $2,100, Dr. Gangel explained. This change also accounts for at least part of the $1,000 increase for stationery and office supplies, he added.
Funding for “Instruction” increased eight percent, or $176,649. At $2.4 million this category accounts for more than half of the budget. This category covers the salaries not only of teachers, but also of building principals, assistant principals, school secretaries and teachers’ aides.
