Julia Elizabeth “Julie Whitworth, a senior at Wakefield School in Huntly, is a finalist in the 1989 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing her in a select group representing fewer than one percent of American high school seniors.
The Merit Program, the largest academic competition of its kind, is privately financed by grants from independent sponsors. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, through its announcement of Merit Finalists, hopes “to increase public awareness of the academic accomplishments of exceptionally able young men and women,” according to a spokesman for the corporation.
Miss Whitworth is in her fourth year at Wakefield, where she is currently studying Advanced Placement Biology, Senior English, French V, Philosophy of History, AP Calculus, AP Political Science and Computer Science. She is editor-in-chief of Virtus et Sapientia, the Wakefield yearbook; poetry- editor of Talisman, the school literary magazine; and vice president of the dance committee.
