ner. however. Steve Pinard set the course record for men that year, 31:26, which has not been challenged since. Mr. Pinard, in fact, owns the two fastest times for the hilly, 6.2 mile course. He won in 1984 with a time of 32:20.
He has not returned since 1985, however. and that year a new dynasty began. Tim Kearney, a veteran marathoner from Culpeper, has taken the last three overall trophies, and is- expected to defend his title again this year.
On the women’s side, the course record was set by Kim Belyea df Winchester in 1984 with a time of 36:46. She won again in 1985, but didn’t run in 1986.
That year, the women’s overall title was taken by Christine Beathard, the wife of Washington Redskins General Manager Bobby Beathard, who is also a regular Fodderstack competitor. Her time, however, w as well off Ms. Belyea’s mark.
Ms. Belyea returned in 1987 and won the title for a third time but failed to better her course record.
Last year the women’s title went to Ruth Reimenschneider in the time of 38:39.
If the bourse record for either sex is broken, however, there will be a $200 cash award to the successful runner. Sponsored by Virginia Savings Bank of Front Royal, the bonus is up from the $100 offered last year. If both male and female records fall, the $200 will be split between the two runners.
There will, of course, be at least one other perennial favorite in the race -Frank Reynolds. He’ll be aiming for his ninth straight Eva L. Smith Memorial, the troSee
