After a home run by Clarke’s Erie Hoggett and a long double, Coach Leake went to his bullpen. “I thought Danny Ellis, who got the loss, played a fine game for his first outing of the season,” Leake said.
Bill Atkins started the sixth with a single to center field. Walters hit a double and scored Atkins. Again with one out the Panthers loaded the bases. Again they came away with nothing.
“Basically we didn’t get any breaks today,” said Leake. “But this was only our third game and it was Clarke’s sixth. By the time we’ve played six, we won’t be making the same mistakes. What we need to do is learn how to win without Doug Smith on the mound. He can’t pitch every game for us.”
Rappahannock is now 1-2 in the Bull Run District in the middle of the pack that trails the 5-0 Page Panthers. Their next game is at Brentsville on Friday, April 14. Then on Monday and Tuesday the Panthers come home to face Stonewall Jackson and Manassas Park. Both games begin at 5 p. m.
