Rufus C. Hurt Jr., Bristol; stepdaughter, Shirley Ann Becker, San Jose, Calif.; one brother, John D. Martin, Roanoke; father-in-law, C.L. Smith, Roanoke.
A first cousin, Mrs. Frank (Roberta) Spalding of Flint Hill survives. Mr. Martin was well known in Rappahannock.
Funeral services were conducted at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel on March 21 with the Rev. Arthur E. Grant officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Burial Park.
Dr. Jonathan Rood
Dr. Jonathan Paul Rood, of Delton, MI., died March30.
Mr. Rood was born May 28, 1937, the youngest of four children to Paul Rood and Josephine Connable Rood of Kalamazoo. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Southampton, England.
As a research zoologist in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, he pursued his lifelong love of and fascination with the behavior of animals.
Mr. Rood was a former resident of Rappahannock for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel and a daughter, Josephine.
A memorial service was held April 5 at the Stetson Chapel, Kalamzoo College, Kalamazoo, MI.
Bertha Johnson
Bertha Mae Johnson, 67, of Suitland, Md., widow of Ezra Stillwell Johnson, died April 3 at Greater Southeast Community Hospital in Washington, D.C.
