Arundel Newspapera.Staff Writer - BEN VENUE — In a driving finish, Will Russell bested a field of eight owner-rider hurdlers by 2V2 lengths on Jolly River, retiring the challenge trophy in honor of William B. Brainard Jr., MFH of the Old Dominion Hounds from 1966-76.
Russell won the race the two previous years on News Special. , Hager Hill and Lady Bee Bar took the early lead as Russell kept Jolly River in third position. With 6ne time left to go around, Russell moved out in front past Lady Bee Bar, whom Gunnell kept within striking distance. Though Gunnell made a run at the frontrunner in the stretch. Jolly River managed to sustain his lead by 2V2 lengths.
“He was a little strong at the beginning. I didn’t know whether to let him go right up front and stay there or to hang back,” said Russell about Jolly River who has won four times this season.
Another Yovanovich-trained horse repeated his winning performance of last year. Mocito Bien won the ladies’ timber for Juliet Graham, besting Warrenton winner Tougher Still and Patti Cassel by a hefty eight lengths. Michele Rouse and Useful Information came in third.
Favorski with Fonda Graley ran strongly at the beginning of the 5horse contest, challenged by Ronnie Lee with Susan Wight. Favorski fell at the sixth fence, and the loose horse forced Ronnie Lee off course, Reaving Mocito Bien with the lead which he kept past the finish.
Graham held off Tougher Still who rallied belatedly in the stretch. Cassel had to settle for second.
