Last year, Nina Stamer captured the Smith Memorial for the first time on the women's side. She will also be running again in defense of her title.
Several runners are coming from some distance away this year. Col. Dieter Knuepfer’s daughter, Karen Firestone, and a friend arrived in town this week after running across the State of Washington*The run was part of the state's celebration of the centennial of its acceptance into the Union.
This will be Ms. Firestone’s second Fodderstack, but after running 425 miles in eight days along the Lewis and Clark Trail the road from Flint Hill to Washington may seem like a stroll in the country.
The organizers have promised an exceptionally well-run race this year, with several of the glitches at the finish line having been rethought and smoothed out. “There will be a new chute design this year," Ms. Murray said, "and the results will be handled differently."
That will be good news to the hard-core runners who compete, many of whom become anxious for the results only seconds after they finish -while most people are still gasping for breath.
But the Fodderstack has never been just a “runner's" race. It has always been a community event, when people come out to run, or walk, or cheer on their neighbors.
