Addressing me cnimneys, ivir. Kulski said his intention was to make the building proportional on the south side with the addition of the wing, which would also add another chimney. Approaching from the south, driving up Main St., he said, motorists would then see, “a progression.of chimneys.”
Mr. Wells replied that his suggestions were offered only to preserve the significant architectural features of the existing structure. “I’m not an architect, and I'm not the architect hired for this project. It is not for me to userp their authority-”
However, he said, placing the addition behind the existing structure, tied to it with a hallway, would offer an alternative which would allow the needed living space to be added while still preserving the chimneys and the existing architectural composition in general.
Whayne Haffler, an architect and county resident who consulted with the board, told them that the house is, “an unusual, striking house.”
The question, he suggested, is "how important the house is to the fabric of the town, and w hether you want to preserve it."
He pointed to the unusual, asymmetrical entry way, as well as the house’s position on the lawn as important architectural features in addition to the twin chimneys.
"If you are going to preserve the house, if you decide it is an important house, then you need to preserve it as it is.”
If the grade of the front lawn is raised one complete level to change the entrance, he said, "it is a substantial alteration in the way the house presents itself." And, he added, an addition on the south side
