Owner Charles Whitehouse bought Mocito Bien about ten days ago. “I bought him as a hunter — he goes on the buckle,” he said. Since the horse was racing fit, Whitehouse decided to let him run. 1 Dr. Blase ran a good race in the open hurdle race but suffered his first real defeat this year. The horse under Hilary Thompson took the early lead and kept it for V/2 miles, ■and spectators looked forward to a repeat performance of Casanova, Happahannock and Warrenton.
Sampson Hall ran in second place with Rappahannock winner Dusty High in third the first time around as Michel Gauthier kept Fe back. With one fence left to go, Cockburn edged Sampson Hall forward, and Gauthier kept Fe running at his heels.
After the last fence Sampson Hall took the lead, only to have it snatched in the stretch by Fe, who won the race by 3/4’s of length. Dr. Blase trailed Sampson Hall by three lengths.
‘‘My trainer told me to stay behind, but he just w'on by himself,” kgaid Gauthier. The horse, imported from England two years ago, won a sanctioned race at Middleburg last year and is headed for Richmond next week. “This race was just a prep,” said Gauthier, who enjoyed tw'o wins Saturday.
Topeador had a day of rest since no owner-rider timber owners showed up to compete against the big chestnut in the Old Dominion Hunt Cup. Wood galloped through the stretch and collected his winning points.
