Following President Bush’s inaugural call for “a new engagement in the lives of others, a new activism,” National Volunteer Week 1989 (April 9-15) offers an opportunity for all of us to encourge young Americans to become part of a national movement of youth volunteerism. For just as surely as voluntary community service humanizes a society, it also shapes and strengthens the character of those who serve.
The surge of senior citizens volunteering in our ACTION programs (from 296,000 older volunteers in 1980 to 431,000 this year) has taught us that only two things are needed to get people to reach out and pitch in: first, they must be asked; and second, they must be given a meaningful role. The President has asked American youth to come forward, and he has rallied behind the multitude of community organizations, the “thousand points of light” which provide opportunities for muchneeded service in every comer of the nation.
Now let us each do our part, as parents and as concerned citizens, to inspire our children and teach them that they are expected to give something back to America as they reap the blessings of liberty. Just as surely as we try to provide the best in education, sports, arts and material advantages, let us encourage our young to make time for those less fortunate than themselves. For few experiences break down barriers and build character more than volunteering.
And what of the economically disadvantaged youngsters among us who may be losing hope that the American dream has any reality for them? No matter what their skin color, they are all assuredly our children. By providing opportunities for service, we can teach these youth what Americans who have been down and out and then overcome adversity have always learned: that to
