Smithwicks did not think the horse had the potential to make it as a timber horse, so the Shackelfords asked Noel Twyman to do what he could.
He won his first start this year over timber at Rappahannock and then fell two fences from home at Farmington. He returned to his winning ways on Saturday.
Dawn Dugan on Glyn and Jerry Glass on Life’s Gamble took the early lead in the second division of the rider opportunity race while Cort Marzullo hung back with Annie’s Exchange, biding his time. The field ran tightly bunched, with Life’s Gamble and Glyn exchanging the lead until Glyn dropped back after 3/4’s of a mile.
While Life’s Gamble ran on the front end, Laura Whitney edged Krabloonik up from behind. Then Marzullo gunned Annie’s Exchange with a quarter of a mile to go. At the head of the stretch Annie’s Exchange, Life’s Gamble and Krabloonik galloped neck-and-neck.
At the wire it was Annie’s Exchange who won on the nod over Life’s Gamble.
“Tommy said to let her run where she wanted to go, and then when you get up the hill, hit her with the stick,” laughed Marzullo, referring to trainer Tommy Lee Jones’ winning instructions.
Katherine with Nelson Gunnell led the pack in the first division of the 8-horse race followed by Branscome on Symphony Sid. With Vi of a mile to go, Hilary Thompson moved Russian Begum up from behind, flashing past atherine and drew away to win by eight widening lengths.
“I’ve loved him for years,” said Thompson about the horse, owned by Magalen Bryant and trained by Roger Dodson. “He surprised me coming up that hill. I hit him twice when he got doing the snake on me, then I hand rode him,” she said.
The horse finished third at Middleburg’s sanctioned race last year, and the owner might run him there again this year.
Chatisun led the pack in the last race of the day, followed by Cockburn on Saratoga Tiger on the outside and Private Showing with Eric Juvonen. With 5/8’s of a mile to go, Run Nicoma Run was running in fourth place while Bourke brought Cartsprings closer to the lead. With 1/16 of a mile left, Newman made his move on Run Nicoma Run and beat Cartsprings by a hair in a driving finish.
“She’s such a tryer,” said Newman. “She didn’t need to fall at Warren ton,” he said, referring to her hurdle spill.
The win today should boost her confidence.
