Plagued by early season inconsistencies, the Rappahannock Panthers vasity baseball team dropped two close battles over the week.
The Panthers’ first loss of the season came on April 4 to the Page Panthers, 12-10. Then on Tuesday, April 11, RCHS squandered its home opener, 7-0, on the Clarke County Eagles.
Defensively the Page game was' one both teams would rather forget. Rappahannock committed eight errors while their Panther counterparts were guilty of nine.
Despite their poor showing in the field, Rappahannock almost stole the win in the sixth inning. Down 8-7, Bill Atkins swung and missed for a third strike that would have been the Panthers’ second out. But Page’s catcher, G.W. McLaughlin, couldn’t hold on to the ball and Atkins was safe at first.
Page struck out Julian Groves. Next up, Anthony Porter batted in Atkins with a single that was stretched into a triple following a three-base error by Page third baseman Ricky Good.
Philip Daczewitz smashed a double, scoring Porter, and crossed” home plate himself, compliments of an error by shortstop Larry Housden. Rappahannock led 10-8 before Page came to bat.
Page capitalized on four hits and a pair of walks off losing pitcher, Doug Smith, for the final lead, 12-10.
The only other times RCHS had the lead was 3-0 in the top of the first, and when they regained it 5-3 in the top of the second. Groves, Porter, and Smith led the Panthers at the plate hitting two-out of- four.
