Larry Poe on Fleeting Roy was another repeat winner. Poe took the lead in the first race, fending off challenges from Turn To Billy with Cort Marzullo and Sir Fieldmont with Eurydice Rorick.
As the race progressed the seven horses spread out, with Fleeting Roy running easily on the front end. Rorick kicked Sir Fieldmont into gear in the stretch, passing Turn To Billy but was unable to catch Fleeting Roy, who won by ten lengths.
“If you just get him to the front and let him set his own pace, he's hard to beat,” said Poe about his father’s horse who won for him at Blue Ridge and was second at Orange County. Owner-trainer Albert Poe, Middleburg’s huntsman, won on him at Piedmont.
Sir Arthur took command early in the first division of the maiden hurdle race, running alone on the front end while Bourke kept Trainer Tree back in third.
Bourke made his move after the seventh fence, catching up to Sir Arthur and jumping the last two fences with the lead. "He’s just gobbling up ground," said announcer Will O’Keefe as Trainer Tree galloped on, passing Sir Arthur to win by Vi length. Kool Mars came in third, four lengths behind Sir Arthur.
“I kept a nice even pace throughout,” said Bourke who was confident of his win. “That horse has won a lot of races last year on the fiat.”
The field ran tightly bunched in the second division of the maiden hurdle contest, with Vertical Alien, Moseby and Roaring Reef exchanging the lead initially.
