The county’s Board of Supervisors and Washington’s Town Council have scheduled a joint public hearing next Tuesday, April 18, to hear comments on the proposed swap of the county library and the town hall.
The idea originated when the library’s Board of Trustees announced that it had acquired property just outside Washington to build a new library.
The present library, on Gay St. in towrn, belongs to the county and its disposition falls within the authority of the Board of Supervisors.
The town, in turn, has retaken possession of the Town Hall, next to the courthouse complex, but has not yet decided how it will be used. The feeling of the council, however, is that the town is in need of some office space for its records, and also possibly for meetings.
The county is facing a serious shortage of space in the courthouse complex, and even more offices will be needed if the Building and Zoning Office leaves the Baumgardner building, as Mr. Baumgardner has requested due to the expansion of his law office.
County Administrator John McCarthy has also told the supervisors that the county’s judges have requested a second courtroom to handle the increasing number of cases being heard in the county.
