“When I counsel with people who have been victims of rape or incest, and I counsel with people that have had abortions, I recognize, from the pain that they’ve gone through and the stories that they tell, that it’s not something government can decide,” said the Democratic challenger. “Each individual case is so different.”
Smith said that his abortion stance does not conflict with his ministerial role because the Methodist church’s official position is no government involvement.
Smith, who has also stressed environmental protection in his campaign platform, said that the United States needs to seek the use of alternate forms of energy.
“I see the role of federal government being more as one of education and one of becoming an environmental consumer,” he said.
