With the coming of the fall color season, Shenandoah National Park has announced its schedule of fall activities.
This schedule is now underway, but could be curtailed for lack of funding in the absence of an approved federal budget. “The present schedule will last through Oct. 15, and the public is invited to enjoy their National Park during one of its most beautiful periods,” said Park Superintendent J.W. Wade.
Dickey Ridge Visitor Center (mile 4.6) and Byrd Visitor Center (Milepost 51) are open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Evening campfire programs will be offered on Friday and Saturday nights at Skyline Lodge and Loft Mountain Campground, Thursday through Saturday at Big Meadows, and on Saturday nights at Lewis Mountain Campground. Conducted tours and demonstrations are also offered at these locations.
Special programs for the fall include “Cycles of Autumn,” a twomile hike from the Upper Hawksbill parking lot (Mile 46.7) at 9 a.m., on Saturdays; “September Flowers, October Leaves,” a 1-2 mile walk from Byrd Visitor Center at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays; “Autumn Night Sky,” a one-mile evening hike from Byrd Visitor Center at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays; and “Signs of Autumn,” a one-mile walk at Loft Mountain
