Fire safety first
This week, Oct. 7-13, is National Fire Prevention Week. The annual observance falls at an appropriate time of the year, as fall’s cool evenings tempt people to build a crackling blaze in the fireplace or stoke up the woodstove.
Unfortunately, too often they yield to temptation before having their chimneys and flues cleaned and inspected, and the result is a chimney fire. They can quickly become fullblown structure fires, particularly in older homes where the chimney may be deteriorated from age.
We urge our readers to help their local fire departments by having their chimneys cleaned and inspected before lighting that first fire of the year. The volunteers are always ready to respond to an emergency, but they’d rather not visit their neighbors on the back of a fire truck.
And while we’re offering reminders, this is a good time to make sure that the fire and rescue emergency numbers (987;8525 or 675-3331) are posted near each telephone, along with dear directions to the home. Those numbers and directions -ai»e invaluable in an emergency, and could save a life.
