“When people are dying in the Middle East, then the price of oil just got significantly higher — too high,” said the Democratic candidate.
Smith said that the United States has increased its need for foreign oil. “And that’s just not acceptable,” he said.
In response to a question asking him how he would address the budget crisis that has baffled federal lawmakers, Smith likened the budget situation to driving 60 miles per hour and ending up three feet from a brick wall.
“That’s the situation that they’ve allowed themselves to get in. They’re three feet from a solid brick wall,” Smith said.
“They needed to start six months ago,” he said. “We’ve got to get spending under control and our books in order.”
Smith said that Congress needs to find ways to cut costs across the board rather than “trying to put the burden on a few very small groups.”
