Teacher support
As parents we feel it is our responsibility to support teachers in their difficult and important job. We realize that parent help must be coordinated in a systematic manner or else it becomes a nuisance. Here are some possible approaches:
• The formation of a Teacher-Parent Task Force to design a parent training program.
• Parents can continue to help with mechanical jobs, in a more coordinated way, for the specific purpose of freeing teachers to think, design and research.
• A parent-run monthly assembly can be designed in cooperation with the faculty. The assembly would be staffed by parents, so that teachers could have an extra shared planning period.
• A call to parents has been made to become registered substitutes and volunteer their labor for teacher training days.
We greatly value learning opportunities for our faculty. We appreciate the School Board’s support of the Master’s Degree Program. The administration’s encouragement of teachers to visit other schools as part of their in-service training provides another excellent learning opportunity. The fact that the superintendent is participating in a Fellowship Program sends the message to the faculty and students that he, too, is deeply engaged in learning. This kind of positive leadership is commendable.
We believe our teachers should have more flexibility in how they achieve the agreed upon learning goals of their grade and subject. They are intelligent professionals whose problem-solving skills and creativity are daily examples to our
