From the news stories I read, I have concluded that our decisionmakers have decided that within a few weeks, we or someone must instigate a war.
The war must be started, in part, because we cannot expect to maintain our planned 200,000 military personnel, their war machines and support systems, indefinitely in the deserts of Arabia and the unfamiliar world into which they have been projected. It is almost as if we had sent an expeditionary force to the ocean floor with a finite supply of oxygen.
If and when war is our condition, we will not know about all that happens. As you may have heard, truth is war’s first casualty. But we will learn enough to make us wonder1 what sort of idiots human beings must be to think war is a rational means to solve problems.
Our dead and injured, serious as they may be, won’t be the principal ones. It is the Kuwaitis, Iraqis, Jordanians, Vietnamese, Egyptians,
