Father Maurice du Castillon, C.I.C.M., described as a “pioneer” for his work in establishing Catholic parishes in Culpeper, Rappahannock, Orange and Madison counties, died Nov. 15 at Sleepy Hollow Nursing Home in Annandale. He was 87.
“Father,” as he was known to the many Rappahannock County residents he befriended during his two years as chaplain of Bethany House retreat in Huntly and six years as the pastor of St. Peter’s Catholic Mission in Washington, won the respect and friendship of his parishoners and the community through his outgoing personality and strong principles.
“He was a very principled man,” the Rev. Jennings Hobson III, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, remembered. “And while we didn’t always agree theologically, I certainly respected him for that.”
And though Father Maurice was “an old-style Catholic in many ways,” Rev. Hobson said, “he was always open with us ecumencially — very cooperative in doing a program together.” His only request, the Rev. Hobson remembered, “he asked that I not make him speak too
