July 28,1903, the son of Maurice and Anna du Castillon Van Hauwaert, Father Maurice entered the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Sept. 8, 1921, after his graduation from college.
He pronounced his first vows on Sept. 8, 1922, and was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on Aug. 21, 1927 by Bishop De Boeck, beginning a 63-year ministry as a missionary.
After completing one year of medical school, in Louvain, Belgium, Father Maurice left for his first mission assignment in China in September, 1929. He attended language school in Peking, and was appointed assistant pastor of a mission in Shansi, Tat’ung, in July, 1930.
The following year, he was appointed pastor in Ling K’iu, where he served until 1933, when he was appointed principal of the Catholic high school in Tat’ung. In August, 1936, he received another pastoral appointment, this time to a mission in Hsu pu.
Because his order was sending more missionaries to China, in 1940 Father Maurice was recalled to Belgium to teach Chinese to new confreres. He spent six years in service
