“The last months of the year provide many occasions for parties and celebration,” said Tony Nicely, president of Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO). “But too often those happy occasions turn to tragedy because people choose to drink and drive.”

Mr. Nicely offers the following tips to be sure your party guests have a good time and a safe trip home.

• Serve both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and make sure guests know both kinds are available.

• Frequently offer your guests food to balance their drinking. Serve food in waves to encourage return trips to the table, or walk food around the room.

• Choose protein-oriented items and rich, starchy foods that will delay the absorption of alochol into the bloodstream. These include cheeses, seafood and pizza.

• Serve drinks only upon request.
