The over-the-hill-gang will ride again — or at least shoot again — this weekend as 48 of Rappahannock High School’s former basketball players return for the second annual Alumni Basketball Tournament.
The four teams will square off in a preliminary round Friday evening, then return Saturday night for the championship matchup, which will , be proceeded by a consolation game.
According to RCHS basketball coach Gary Leake, who organized the benefit tournament, last year’s successful matches should be even better this year.
This year, Coach Leake gained a sponsor for the event, Shenandoah Motors of Front Royal, which is providing game jerseys for all four teams, trophies for the champion, ship team and an MVP plaque to be awarded by the officials.
Shenandoah Motors is also sponi soring a permanent plaque with the roster of the championship team, which will be mounted in the gymnasium lobby.
Teams were chosen Monday evening by a limited draft. Each coach was allowed to protect five players, ■v. plus himself, then draft the remaining six players, Coach Leake explained. “We wanted to keep it as fair as possible.”
Through that selection process, the following teams are slated to square off Friday evening.
Light blue: Anthony Porter (captain), Butch Foster, Gary Leake, Michael Leake, Steve Leake, Jeff Porter, Gary Settle, Matthew Settle, Mike Smoot, Mike Tupper, Tony Wayland, Reggie Williams.
White: Ricky Shaw (captain), Bill Atkins, Mike Atkins, Mark Brown, Rob Brown, Tony Clark, Philip Daczewitz, Godfrey Freeman, Wesley Jenkins, Brooke Miller, Mike Payne, Tommy Sisk.
Navy blue: Ron Nicholson (captain), Pete Aylor, Ronald Dodson, Danny Ellis, Wayne Foster, Aubrey Frye, Mike Massie, Bobby Settle, ■ Carroll Settle, Doug Smith, Johnny Smith, Richard Tribino.
Gold: Walter Frye (captain), Jamie Allsberry, Tremayne Allsberry, Gregg Daczewitz, Glen Fletcher, Dexter Freeman, Carl Frye, Carroll Frye, Devon Moore, Clarence Pendleton, Benji Roy, Daniel Roy.
