Enrollment is up statewide, and the State Department of Education says it does not have money to fund the increased enrollment, the superintendent reported.
This complicates the problem of paying for a replacement roof over the high school auditorium and commons area. The school administration had counted on using state funds for increased enrollment to pay for the roof.
Money to replace the roof had been left out of the budget for this year when the school administration realized that funds from the state would be lower in the current budget than in the previous one. However the heavy rains in October con-* vinced schol administrators that the roof couldn’t wait for the next budget year.
The School Board received bids for the replacement roof at last week’s meeting. Southwest Virginia Roofing bid $18,860 to replace the roof with roofing materials similar to those used on most of the classroom sections of the schools. This is a material that comes in 40-inch wide sections that are overlapped and sealed.
