create the black majority district in a southern part of the state or to put an 11th district, an extra one Virginia will pick up, in Northern Virginia where much of the state’s growth has taken place. Gov. Wilder has indicated the Northern Virginia location would be logical.
Addressing NAAGP members he said, “If we assume that Democrats - and I’m one of them - are evil mean people plotting against African Americans and that the other party is the friend, I wonder where I’ve been all this time.’’
And again Gov. Wilder returned to a familiar theme, the need for blacks to take responsibility for their actions. Black leaders, he said, should be “devoting their time and energies to making unrelenting demands of themselves and of others in the name of our most just and worthy cause, the youth and families of today and tomorrow.”
Gov. Wilder’s talk and actions have gotten him praise from such unlikely sources as Gingrich, the Richmond Thnes-Dispatch and conservative leaders, while dismaying the NAACP and liberals.
And despite his denial of lack of interest in national office, Democrats looking for victory in 1992 will have to take a long hard look at a black southern governor who can’t be labeled a liberal and with proven appeal to middle-class whites.
