Press reports called his reception “subdued” as Wilder told the liberals that for America to get its deficit problem solved it must do what Virginia has done - cut spending.
“It is impossible to meet the challenges of the ’90s without understanding that fiscal responsibility is at the center of any forward-thinking agenda and vision for the future,” said Gov. Wilder, who is often mentioned as a Democratic candidate for President or Vice President in 1992.
Asked about the Evans case, Gov. Wilder said he decided that the seriousness of the crime precluded clemency though Evans and his supporters had said he deserved mercy because of his role in protecting several prison guards and nurses during a 1984 prison uprising.
As Gov. Wilder was speaking in Massachusetts, one of his most persistent critics, black Richmond lawyer Sa’ad El-Amin, told a state meeting of the NAACP that Wilder had shown lack of concern for black families and had become a black leader with an ‘I’ve got mine,’ attitude.
