Bear Roofing of Charlottesville bid $37,531 to install an EPDM roof. That would be a thick rubber-like material that comes in 30-foot wide sheets that are mechanically sealed. The same firm also recommended and bid $29,142 for a polyurethane roof covered with gravel.
Another bid was received later from Shen-Valley Roofing for between $18,000 and $19,000, Dr. Gangel said. The bid had been postmarked on time and held up in the mail, he said. It was for a similar type of roof to the one Southwest Virginia bid on, but the area of roof to be covered was smaller.
The School Board appointed a committee of members Paul Nichols, Bryant Lee and John Tole to study the bids and perhaps examine roofs built by the bidding companies and make a recommendation to the full board.
Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell expressed hope that the decision could be made by Thanksgiving so that roof work could be finished before the Christmas band concert scheduled for Dec. 18.
