Assisting to assure exactness, Mrs. Smith will test dial pressure canner guages from 9 a.m. to noon on July 15 at the Extension office in Rappahannock.
Only those pressure canners with dial gauges can be tested.
“It’s important to check the guages periodically,” she said, adding older canners can lose their effectiveness if the dial is incorrect.
“You need only bring your lid,” Mrs. Smith said, adding she uses another pressure gauge to measure.
The test — requiring less than 16 minutes of time — offers the canner owner or user a confidence valuable when pressure canning.
“If the gauge is off, you need not buy an entirely new canner,” Mrs. Smith said, adding: “You just need to purchase a new guage from a local hardware store.”
