On May 8 Edgar Robb, a former FBI agent, announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination. Mr. Longyear said he expects Mr. Robb to get the nomination and run a strong campaign.
In the 26th Virginia Senate District, which includes the rest of Rappahannock County, incumbent Sen. Kevin Miller is unopposed for the Republican nomination. Local Democratic Party chairman Douglas Baumgardner said party chairman from the district, which includes parts or all of Rappahannock, Stafford, Culpeper, Fauquier, Page, and Rockingham counties and the City of Harrisonburg, will meet next week in Culpeper with two potential party nominees.
He said Margaret Haines of Harrisonburg, who is currently a legislative aid to Sixth District Democratic Congressman Jim Olin, has expressed interest in running for the seat as has Bill Chase, a member of the Culpeper Board of Supervisors, who ran unsuccessfully against Sen. Miller four years ago.
Mr. Baumgardner said the population of the district was shifted as a result of redistricting. Now 46 percent of the voters live east of the Blue Ridge mountains. Before redistricting only 35 percent of the voters were east of the mountains. He believes this shift will give a challenger to Sen. Miller a greater chance than Mr. Chase had four years ago.
