By SHARON KILPATRICK ; R*pp»h»iinocli New* Staff Writer ■ Even before U.S. Rep. D. French Slaughter Jr., announced that he would resign his Seventh district seat in the House of Representatives effective with a special election Nov. 5, the pace of this election year had picked up.
With Sept. 11 instead of the usual mid-June as the deadline for candidates to file, the political year was off to a slow start. The later deadline was set to accommodate the redistricting process.
Political parties are now screening candidates to run in the newly drawn districts.
In the 31st House of Delegates District, which will include all of Rappahannock County, most of Fauquier County and four precincts in Warren County, Jerry Wood has no opposition in the Democratic Party. He will probably be nominated at a convention in Rappahannock County.
The Republicans are considering two Rappahannock County men. Richard McNear of Washington and Robert Darby of Woodville have both said they are interested in the nomination. , Local Republican Party Chairihan Walter Longyear said both men met with party chairmen from the three counties last week and will be meeting with the three county political committees next week. ; “They are both good candidates,” he said. “This will give them an opportunity to decide whether or not to continue based on what kind of support they have with party workers.”
If both remain in the race, the outcome will be decided at mass meetings held in the three counties the last week in August, Mr. Longyear said. At that time delegates will be elected to the 31st District convention to be held Sept. 5 at Warrenton Junior High School.
