The county’s newest state trooper is a Rappahannock native, Gary Thomas Settle, 29, of Chester Gap.
Trooper Settle began patrolling county roads last week, replacing longtime county trooper Harry Newlin, who was promoted to sergeant and transferred to Mineral, Va.
Trooper Settle most recently was stationed with the Area 13 office in Winchester, serving with the Warren County duty post.
A graduate of the Rappahannock High Class of 1979, Trooper Settle is the assistant coach for the Panthers baseball team. He is married to the former Kelly Jo Gilkey, the high school’s front-office secretary.
His parents, Fred T. and Mary J. Settle, live in Castleton. Brother Greg, sister Jackie and sister Kim Vest all live in Rappahannock.
Trooper Settle requested the transfer, he said, because “I have a lot of ties here. I missed the county pretty much.”
