• Accepted the contribution of an extra set of bleachers from the Lions’ Club.
• Approved the application for Chapter I funding from the federal government. Extra funding is expected for the coming year that will enable the school system to hire an additional teacher at the high school to teach remedial reading.
• Learned that Conaway Bus Sales of Pennsylvania wants an extra $4,155 per bus. The board accepted their low bid of $56,224 for two buses. The extra cost would make the company’s bid the highest. Dr. Gangel will ask for legal advice and probably give the bid to Salem Equipment for $62,662.
• Learned that some high school teachers have formed an academic council and plan to develop requirements for an academic letter students can earn.
Food Bank meets
$100,000 goal
“Hands Against Hunger,” the semi-annual fundraising appeal of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, met its spring goal of $100,000.
The Thomas Jefferson Area Food Bank is one of four branches in the 25 county Blue Ridge Network. It serves the city of Charlottesville as well as Greene, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Culpeper, Madison, Rappahannock, Orange and Nelson counties.
“Food distribution to the needy is running at record levels,” said branch manager Dan Bucca. “It is gratifying to know that our donors have responded so generously to our appeal for operating funds.”
The Verona based non-profit Food Bank now handles about six million pounds of donated food each year. Donated food is distributed free to the needy by 735 member agencies.
