A trip past cornfields, turf farms, wildlife refuges, rivers, small villages and tree farms finds the adventurous nature lover in Richardsville, a tiny village in a unique part of Culpeper County.
Though Richardsville may have other interesting things to offer, the Rappahannock River Campground seems to attract hundreds of people during the summer months.
The Rappahannock River Camp-' ground boasts camping on 73 acres of forest with a 800-foot frontage on the Rapphannock River. Outdoorsmen can fish in the river or make splashes canoeing and tubing. «. Operated since 1983 by Ken and Janet Haase, the facility, is a retreat for the couple as well as their clients.
“We wanted to do something different [with our lives] . . . We used to canoe and camp out and we decided we wanted to run a campground,” explained Mrs. Haase, who was a budget analyst in Bethesda, Md., before moving to the rural area. Haase added that he thought it would be a good move when he retired from the Consumer Product Safety Commission in 1985.
The couple spent months searching for the perfect facility, and it was a tiny ad for the lob lolly tree farm in a D.C. newspaper that caught the Haases’ eye.
‘When we saw this place, we never doubted we wanted it,” she said, while standing in a renovated red bam filled with PFDs (life jackets) in crates and canoes stacked from the floor to the ceiling.
The pristine yet primitive campground is their home as well as their business. From April 15 to Oct. 15, the Haases open their facility every day of the week.
‘We have little weekday business,” said Mrs. Haase. “But it is still good to make a reservation during the week — and on the weekend.”
