Gus Brown and his father’s Pop’s Cherry won the only other owner-rider hurdle contest this spring, beating Jolly River into a distant sixth-place. Pop’s Cherry took several weeks off to recover from a mild cold, and she may be the most well-rested in the bunch.
Other horse and rider combinations to watch in the two-mile ’chase will be Sello Y Firmo and Jim Whitner, and Deal’s Island with Noel Twyman. Each of the eight entrants stands a good chance in the competitive race.
The owner-rider timber race will run over three miles of solid obstacles and features Henry Wood and his indomitable Topeador. The Chilean-bred gelding won in a one-horse (one finisher) race at the March 7 Blue Ridge races, following that up with an easy win at the March 21 Piedmont event.
Old Dominion Hunt Master of Foxhounds William Osier will ride his mare Midnight Moves in the contest. Midnight Moves has hunted many seasons with the pack and is sure to be the emotional favorite.
An abbreviated field of five will step onto the course to face Topeador. Consistent winner Sir Fieldmont, with Michael Turner, should provide stiff competition and press the pace.
