“By far, they’re paying the lion’s share,” said John McCarthy, the Rec Authority’s race representative. “In the past we could count on some others to come up with some of the other costs.”

The race takes about $2,600 to run, and it seldom comes within $300 of breaking even anymore—although it used to make money. Any business or individual who can pitch in is encouraged to call Ms. Lillard at 675-3670 or Mr. McCarthy at 6753342.
“While the race brings Rappahannock attention, and tourism, whatever money we do make goes to fund improvements at the county park,” noted Mr. McCarthy.
Pre-registration is $14 and is due by April 17. Send checks payable to the Rappahannock Recreational Authority to P.O. Box 124, Flint Hill, 22627.
Registration takes place the day of the race at Vierling’s Warehouse on U.S. 522 in Flint Hill by 9:30 a.m. and costs $17. Transportation from Washington (the finish line) to Flint Hill is available, but you must be at the courthouse by 9 a.m.

There are new categories for runners in their 40s this year, due to increased demand. The categories are (the same for men and women): 12 and under, 13-18, 19-24, 25-29, 3034, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-59, and 60 and over.
In addition to the Eva Smith Memorial Awards (donated this year by Merrill Strange), trophies go to the first three finishers in each category.
Virginia Savings Bank of Front Royal presents a $300 check to any runner to break the men’s or women’s course records; they split the check if both records fall. The men’s record is 31:26, set by Steve Pinard. The women’s record is 36:46, held by Kim Belyea.
After the race, the Washington Baptist Church will hold its annual spring event featuring box lunches, a plant sale, refreshments and a flea market. Numerous galleries and shops will also be open in Washington.
