Deborah Flinchum’s first grade has used the Whole Language theme “Keeping Yourself Healthy” for the month of February.
This is in conjunction with February being Heart Month and Dental Month. The first week they discussed how the heart works.
According to Mrs. Flinchum, the instructional kit provided by the American Heart Association gave them invaluable ideas and reference materials.
They listened to their own hearts and friends’ hearts with a stethoscope, examined a model of a heart, and had a nurse come in to measure the electricity in their hearts using an EKG machine.
The kids are proud of the fun facts they have learned about the heart. Such as: How fast does an elephant’s heart beat? How far would our veins and arteries stretch if they were placed end to end? Just ask Mrs. Flinchum’s Busy Bee’s!
