The state’s public schools are counting; all of the state’s children in order to portion out more than $450 million in education funds.
The triennial school census, mandated by Virginia law, is used to determine the distribution of the one percent of state sales tax funds that is returned to localities for school division use. During the 1989-90, fiscal year, that amounted to $451 million. State and local school officials also use the census figures for planning purposes.
The school census will count all children one through 19 years of age, and all children with disabilities two through 21 years of age.
Dr. David M. Gangel, superintendent of schools in Rappahannock County, indicates that the local schools will use a combination of take-home forms and door-to-door canvassing to complete the census survey.
The census takers will ask parents to identify the name, age and sex of every child in the family. Information on disabilities will be checked to make sure that all disabled children are receiving appropriate special education and related services as required by federal law.
Local census takers will have proper identification and a letter signed by Dr. Gangel.
The census will be conducted between March 27 and July 15. Final counts are due to the Virginia Department of Education Aug. 15.
It is critical to Rappahannock County that all residents give their full cooperation to the census takers.
