company at $5 a week and 30 years later retired at $25 a week and said she had saved something from every paycheck. At the age of 90 she was saving from her Social Security check.
One year I had to go to Newark on business and since her apartment wasn’t too far out of the way, I would drop by for a visit. I knew that she liked a little nip. I decided to take her a pint in order that we might have a social drink together and she would have some left for the cupboard.
Since she was so careful with her money I was sure she would have no libations in stock. At the same time I bought a pint for myself, to take back to the hotel. Well, I arrived at Aunt Sara’s with the gift, we greeted each other, she thanked me for the gift. She then very carefully put the pint in the cupboard and, closed it.
We chatted, I looked at the cupboard, asked about her health and fidgeted. Finally I excused myself. I went to the car, got the other pint, and came back to the apartment. On seeing this pint in my hand Aunt Sara got quickly up, reached into another cupboard and brought two water glasses to the table. We toasted each other’s health a few times and I left empty handed. Now that was frugal. I liked Aunt Sara more than Uncle George.
