Fourteen years ago the first Fodderstack 10KM Classic road race was run in Rappahannock County. Later this month, April 25, it will be conducted again over the Flint Hillto-Washington course.
Named for Fodderstack Road, the picturesque country lane that connects the two villages, the race is organized by the Rappahannock Recreational Facilities Authority, sponsored by The Inn at Little Washington, and co-sponsored by Eileen Day Realty and Roy Wheeler Realty.
Runners will compete in 10 age categories for men and 10 for women, and local runners will be chasing the Eva Smith Memorials, given to the top male and female runners from Rappahannock County every year.
As popular as the race has become over its history, a cloud threatens the event: money. According to organizer Jean Lillard, an extraordinary effort by The Inn at Little Washington doesn’t make up for dwindling corporate sponsorships— contributions that have kept the annual event alive in the past.
